49 untoward incidents reported at puja mandaps: IGP

15 cases filed, 19 arrested; police say no major communal unrest so far

Police today said at least 49 untoward incidents have taken place at puja mandaps across the country this month, leading to 15 cases being filed since and the arrest of 19 people September 26.

Addressing a press briefing at the police headquarters, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said the incidents were mostly minor and were resolved peacefully without causing major communal unrest.

"We have kept strict surveillance in and around 31,606 puja mandaps to ensure harmony. Whenever an issue arose, police immediately intervened to prevent escalation," he told reporters.

The IGP said in some cases police recorded general diaries (GDs) and in others, cases were filed that led to arrests. "Some accused have already given confessional statements before magistrates," he added.

He further said that rumours and misleading posts on social media, including the circulation of old videos of idol vandalism, were being monitored by the police cyber unit.

"We are alert to ensure that no elements can destabilise social harmony or exploit the situation ahead of the upcoming national election," Baharul said.

Regarding the identities of the arrestees, the IGP said no strong political links have been found so far. In certain cases, family members claimed the accused had mental health issues, though investigators are considering all possibilities, he added.
